Catastrophe Batur Temple

Pura Batur Kintamani was formerly located in the village of Karang Anyar or which means a new area located on the southwest slope of Mount Batur itself, and in 1917 Mount Batur erupted and lava flows caused thousands of victims and destroyed Pura Batur which is located on the slopes of Mount Agung. the. Even though it was destroyed, the black lava flow stopped at the gate of Ulun Danu Batur Temple. Since the lava stopped before it reached the temple, the people saw this as a good sign and decided to stay in the area. On April 21, 1926, Mount Batur erupted again, this time destroying the entire village of Karang Anyar. Lava also rushed towards the temple, covering almost the entire complex. Despite the destruction of the village as well as the loss of 1,500 villagers, this level 11 meru temple survived. With the area around Mount Batur declared uninhabitable during the eruption period, the residents of Kalang Anyar village had to relocate. The relocation process was assisted by villagers from surrounding areas, such as Bayung Village, Tunggiran, Kedisan, Buanan, Sekardadi. The Dutch East Indies government sent Bangli regional troops and some prisoners to assist with the relocation. The surviving 11-story shrine is transported to a new location, as well as other important equipment from the temple.

History Batur Temple

Where the legend tells that one night at the beginning of the fifth month Margasari Dewa Pasupati (Shiva) moved the peak of Mount Mahameru in India and divided it into two parts. He carried one piece with his left hand and the other with his right. The two halves were brought to the throne. The hemisphere that he carried with his right hand became Mount Agung the throne for his son, Dewa Putranjaya (Mahadewa Shiva) and what he carried with his left hand became Mount Batur the throne of Dewi Danu, the Goddess of Water Lake. This legend makes the largest Mount in Bali and the two symbolic elements of "male and female" (Purasa and Pradana) or the two origins of the manifestation of the source; God (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa).
