The lion is the second largest cat in the world after the tiger and can be found in Sub-Saharan Africa (Lion of West Africa) and in western India (Lion of Asia). They live in grasslands and savannas. The size of the male lion is larger than the female lion weighing up to 250 kg. In addition, male lions have a mane on the fist, which is perhaps the most easily recognized feature of the species. Both sexes have hairy tufts at the end of their tails. They can eat up to 8 kg of meat. Lions are carnivorous - they consume a wide variety of prey from big (zebra, giraffe, impala) to small animals (birds, hares, reptiles). Species that can be said to be superior predators, most male lions are more rested, and thhe female does almost all of the hunting. They are mainly nocturnal and work in teams to stalk and ambush prey.
The lion's mane is the most recognizable feature of this species. The mane begins to grow when the lion is about a year old. The color of the mane varies and darkens with age. The results showed that environmental factors, such as average temperature, affected the color and size of the mane. The length of the mane seems to portend successful struggles in male-male relationships. Individuals with darker mane may have longer reproductive lives and higher progeny survival. The main purpose of the mane is to protect the lion's neck and throat in territorial fights with opponents.
The lion is the only social member of the cat family (Felidae). As for the lions in large groups called "pride" , a group usually consists of about 15 lions, including several adult females and up to four males and cubs of both sexes. The lion boys are removed from the group when they reach maturity of about 2-3 years. Lions in groups are often affectionate and, when resting, seem to enjoy good fellowship with lots of touching, head rubbing, licking and purring. Males are territorial and will roar and use scent signals to establish their territory.
